Frequently Asked Questions
Is Madeira good for sport fishing?
Yes — among the world's best for blue marlin. Madeira won the Blue Marlin World Cup three times in the 1990s. The continental shelf drops off steeply within 1-6 km of the south coast, putting grander-class blue marlin grounds 30-40 minutes from Funchal Marina. Other species are abundant: bigeye/bluefin/yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, white marlin. The infrastructure (captains, tournament-grade tackle) is excellent.
When is the best time to fish in Madeira?
Depends on target species. Blue marlin: May-October, peak Jun-Jul. White marlin: Apr-Sep, peak Jul-Nov. Bigeye tuna: Jan-Sep, peak Mar-Jun. Bluefin: Oct-Nov + Jan-May. Yellowfin: Sep-Dec, peak Oct-Dec. Wahoo: Jun-Jan, peak Sep-Dec. Mahi-mahi: May-Oct, peak Jun-Sep. Use the species calendar tool for the full month-by-month heatmap.
How much does a Madeira fishing charter cost?
Big-game offshore (private boat) €600-1800/day. Shared big-game charter €80-180/person. Bottom/inshore €350-600/boat (3-4h). Family-friendly half-day €200-350/family. All prices per boat unless marked per-person. See the full price index for inclusions and tips.
What's the difference between big-game and bottom fishing?
Big-game offshore is trolling at 6-9 knots with heavy tackle for marlin/tuna/wahoo. Long stretches of waiting punctuated by intense fights. Catch rate is variable — 30-40% land marlin in peak season. Bottom/inshore is dropping bait to rocky structures at 50-200m depth for grouper/dentex/bream/snapper/amberjack. Steady action, multiple species per trip. Pick big-game for trophy fish, bottom for eating tonight.
Which captain should I book?
Eight main captains work Madeira's grounds. Flipper II are blue marlin specialists (4.9/5, 125 reviews). Madeira Fishing Charters Prime (35ft Cabo Express, 6-angler capacity, fully licensed). Native Crew is great for smaller groups + families (22ft, 4-angler, 4.9/5 across 113 reviews). Capt David and Madeira Big Game Fishing offer diverse specialties. Katherine B for tournament-grade big-game. Pick by group size + target species — see the captains page or take the charter finder quiz.
Do I have to release the marlin I catch?
Yes. Madeira regulation requires mandatory catch-and-release for blue marlin. No exceptions. Reputable captains use circle hooks, minimise fight time, tag with The Billfish Foundation tag, photograph, and release boatside. This regulation is why the Madeira blue marlin population is healthy enough to hold granders 1-6 km from shore.
What's a 'grander'?
A grander is a billfish over 1,000 lb (about 454 kg). Madeira blue marlin grounds produce grander-class fish most seasons. Average size is around 300 kg, but 450 kg+ fish are possible. The 1995/96/97 Blue Marlin World Cup wins were built on grander-class catches.
Should I book direct or via FishingBooker / GetYourGuide?
Direct booking is usually €5-15 cheaper per person and supports the captain. FishingBooker is the standard sport-fishing aggregator with reviews + flexible cancellation. GetYourGuide and Viator have less Madeira sport-fishing inventory but easier all-in-one booking with other tours. We list options on every captain page.
Will I see whales or dolphins on a fishing trip?
Frequently. Madeira's south coast is excellent cetacean habitat (the same grounds whale-watching boats use). On a typical big-game day you'll see common dolphin pods and often pilot whales. Sperm whale and Bryde's whale sightings happen, especially in summer. Captains are required to give cetaceans a 100m berth under Decree-Law 9/2006.
Can my kids come on a fishing charter?
On bottom/inshore family-friendly half-days, yes — recommended for kids 8+. On big-game offshore charters, only kids 12+ with motivation handle the long days well. Operators like Native Crew and Madeira Big Game Fishing (Calheta) run smaller boats specifically for families. Read the family-fishing guide for age guidelines + what to bring.
Will I get seasick on a Madeira fishing charter?
Possibly — sport-fishing trips are the most seasickness-prone format on Madeira boats because of slow trolling speeds (rolling motion) and long offshore stretches. If you have any seasickness history, take cinnarizine (Stugeron) 1 hour before departure. Bottom-fishing half-days are easier than full-day big-game. Read the seasickness guide.
Can I keep tuna and wahoo I catch?
Yes — most pelagic species besides marlin are keepable subject to size + bag limits. Tuna and wahoo are excellent eating; mahi-mahi too. Captains will fillet + vacuum-pack on board (usually included; some charge €5-15). Take what you'll eat — Madeira fishing has a strong conservation ethic.
Are tips expected for the crew?
Yes — €50-100 per boat for half-day, €100-200 for full-day. Tips are split between captain + mate(s). Cash in euros at the end of the day. Higher tip is appropriate after a particularly good catch or when the crew worked unusually hard for a fish. Card tips accepted on some boats.
What should I bring on a Madeira fishing charter?
Reef-safe sunscreen (high SPF), hat with strap, polarized sunglasses with strap, layers (mid-sea is windy and cool), waterproof jacket, water + snacks (some operators provide; many don't), motion-sickness medication, closed-toe non-slip shoes, light gloves if you're prone to rod-burn. Rods, reels, tackle, bait — all provided.
What if the trip is cancelled for weather?
Reputable captains rebook or refund weather cancellations at no charge. Decision is usually made the morning of departure or the night before. Build a 1-2 day buffer into your trip if fishing is the main reason you're in Madeira. Persistent NE winds with 25+ knots cancel offshore trips; bottom-fishing closer to shore is more weather-tolerant.
